March 11, 1999 PRESS RELEASE URGENT CASE OF U.S. CITIZENS KILLED IN COLOMBIA STATEMENT FROM JULIE FREITAS

To the Colombian and international media, to goverments worldwide, 
to non-governmental representatives of the international 
community, and to youth everywhere. 

I have received the latest news accounts reporting that leaders of the 
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas have 
attributed the killings of my son Terence Freitas, 24, Ingrid 
Washinawatok, 41, and Lahe'ena'e Gay, 39, to a  local rebel 
commander. 

I stress emphatically that the family members and friends of 
Terence are not interested in any more bloodshed in Colombia. I 
understand the FARC frequently administer internal justice in cases 
like these by executing those allegedly responsible. I beg the FARC 
leaders not to destroy any more young lives. I do not want any 
mother to have to experience what I have experienced with the 
tragic loss of my son. If members of the FARC are indeed responsible, 
I would like to talk with them about the roots of their anger, about 
the source of this rage that prompted them to commit such a 
senseless act - the killings of people they obviously knew not enough 
about. I would like them to know that my son worked passionately 
in his short and tragically interrupted life to bring peace and 
tolerance and life to Colombia, following the example of the U'wa, the 
"thinking people." 

I have learned from the U'wa elders that my son Terence sent his 
spirit to them in a dream this week. In this dream, Terence gave the 
elders a snail shell, which to the U'wa symbolizes peace and problem 
solving. Let this urgent plea from my son spread from the sacred 
land of the U'wa, from Kajka Ika, the heart of the world, throughout 
Colombia, throughout the international community. Let people 
everywhere respond to this tragedy by working to bring peace to 
Colombia so that communities like the U'wa may continue to 
preserve human life and the dignity of the land. 

Before his death, Terence helped write a report about the U'wa 
people called, "Blood of Our Mother." The report prophetically states: 
"Colombian President-elect Andres Pastrana has a tremendous 
opportunity in this crisis. A promising peace process between the 
guerrillas and the government may allow the space for cooler heads 
to prevail. Human rights may yet  triumph over multinational 
corporate interests." Following my son's example, I request: 

- that all Colombian guerrilla groups, paramilitary groups and 
government security forces declare a multilateral cease-fire to "allow 
the space for cooler heads to prevail." 

- that the U.S. Congress immediately suspend military aid to 
Colombia to foster a climate which promotes peace. 

- that a thorough and independent criminal investigation of these 
murders be conducted. 

- that the FARC refrain from any more executions. 

- that the international community, both government and non-
governmental entities, organize a multilateral effort for peace in 
Colombia, similar to the effort which brought about the Dayton Peace 
Accords for Bosnia. 

- that young people everywhere continue to follow the example of 
my son by living by their convictions and by walking, not in fear but 
with dignity.

URGENTE 

CASO DE LOS TRES NORTEAMERICANOS ASESINADOS EN COLOMBIA 

DE JULIE FREITAS, MADRE DE TERENCE 

 

A la prensa colombiana e internacional, a los gobiernos en todo el 
mundo, a los representantes de los organismos no guberamentales, y 
a los jovenes: 

He recibido los ultimos reportajes informando que lideres de las 
Fuerzas= Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), han 
responsabilizado a un comandante local de su organizacion por los 
asesinatos de mi hijo, Terence Freitas, 24, Ingrid Washinawatok, 41, 
and Lahe'ena'e Gay, 39. 

 Quisiera declarar enfaticamente que los familiares y amigos cercanos 
de Terence no queremos ver mas sangre derramada en Colombia. 
Entiendo que las FARC con frecuencia emplean metodos de justicia 
interna, ejecutando a sus miembros. Ruego a las FARC, por favor no 
se acaben con las vidas de mas jovenes. No quiero que otra madre 
tenga que soportar este dolor tan profundo que significa la perdida 
de un hijo.  Si, de hecho, miembros de las FARC son responsables, 
quisiera hablar con ellos para entender las raices de su rabia, las 
raices de esta furia que les impulso a cometer este acto 
incomprehensible - la matanza de tres personas que ni siquiera 
conocieron. Quiero que sepan que mi hijo trabajo apasionadamente 
en su vida, la cual fue tragicamente interumpida, para promover la 
paz, la tolerancia y la vida en Colombia y en el mundo, siguiendo el 
ejemplo de los U'wa, "la gente que piensa." 

 Los lideres espirituales de los U'wa me han informado que mi hijo 
Terence, esta semana, les visito en un sueno. En este sueno, Terence 
les entrego un caracol, el cual simboliza para los U'wa la paz y la 
resolucion de los conflictos. Ojala que este clamor de mi hijo se 
arranque desde la tierra sagrada de los U'wa, desde Kajka Ika, el 
corazon del mundo, y que se riega por todo Colombia, y por toda la 
comunidad internacional. Que personas de integridad en todo el 
mundo respondan a esta tragedia, redoblando los esfuerzos para 
traer la paz a Colombia, para que comunidades y pueblos como los 
U'wa puedan continuar preservando la vida humana y la dignidad de 
la tierra. 

 Antes de su muerte, Terence colaboro en escribir un informe 
titulada: "Sangre de Nuestra Madre." El informe profeticamente dice: 
"El presidente-electo Andres Pastrana se enfrenta una gran 
oportunidad con este crisis. Un proceso de paz muy promisorio entre 
la guerrilla y el gobierno pueda crear el espacio para que prevalezcan 
cabezas mas frias. Todavia  hay tiempo para que se triunfen los 
derechos humanos encima de los intereses de las corporaciones 
multinacionales." Siguiendo el ejemplo de mi hijo, solicito lo siguiente: 

 = que todos los grupos guerrilleros, las organizaciones paramilitares 
y las fuerzas de seguridad del estado colombiano declaren un cese de 
fuego inmediato y multilateral para "crear el espacio para que 
prevalezcan las cabezas mas frias." 

= que se adelante una investigacion exhaustiva e independiente de 
estos asesinatos 

= que las FARC cesan todas las ejecuciones, aun las de los 
responsables de estos crimenes. 

= que los miembros de la comunidad internacional, de sectores= 
guberamentales y no-guberamentales, organicen un esfuerzo 
multilateral por la paz en Colombia, similar al esfuerzo adelantado en 
los acuerdos de Dayton, buscando la paz en Bosnia 

= que los jovenes en todo el mundo siguen el ejemplo de mi hijo, 
viviendo= desde las raices de sus convicciones, caminando sin miedo 
y con dignidad.
