Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World

A Book about Hope in Colombia!

Sunday, 17 May 1998

The author says:

My new book set in Colombia, titled Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World, has been just released. Based on a documentary I did for National Public Radio in 1994, it tells a remarkably hopeful -- and true -- story in the midst of Colombia's ongoing misfortunes. It particularly showcases Colombia's magnificent natural environment, and chronicles the efforts of Colombian visionaries who for nearly three decades have learned how to prosper with nature instead of destroying it.

Their accomplishments would be noteworthy anywhere; that they've achieved them despite the seemingly impossible conditions of Colombia's troubles -- all the while remaining intentionally unarmed and defenseless -- is inspiration for us all. It may be no coincidence that they are probably the only community in the country that is intentionally unarmed. As Gaviotas founder Paolo Lugari puts it: "If we can do this in Colombia, there's hope that people can do it anywhere."

My publisher has a website for the book: www.chelseagreen.com/Gaviotas

Thanks for your kind attention. Best regards.
