======= ======== ======= COLOMBIAN LABOR MONITOR ======== ======= ======== ======= Friday, 19 June 1998 ======== --------------------- Breaking news out of Bogota has it that the Telecom strike has been lifted as a result of intense negotiations between the Telecom unions and the Colombian government. Some labor sources are indicating that the declaration of the 10-day- old strike as "illegal" has brought considerable pressure on the unions to accept an agreement that would end the strike and diffuse the very tense situation that had developed in light of the refusal of Telecom president Jose Blackburn Cortez to negotiate in good faith. By declaring the Telecom workers' strike "illegal", the Colombian government cleared the way to invoke laws under which union leaders and organizers can be arrested on charges of "terrorism". In the past, death-squads have used similar declarations as convenient justifications to assassinate unionists as "terrorists" and "guerrilla sympathizers".
