Human Rights Defender Assassinated
----------------------------------
BOGOTA -- Two gunmen on a motorcycle killed a peace activist Tuesday
outside her home in the northern city of Valledupar.
Amparo Jimenez Pallares, 38, had just returned from driving her son to
school, said police.
Jimenez, was the fourth prominent human rights defender assassinated this
year. Her killing could be part of what some analysts consider a campaign
to torpedo government efforts to reach a peace agreement with leftist
guerrillas.
As a state director of the federal government's Peace Network, Jimenez
helped demobilized leftist rebels re-enter society and establish
businesses.
She had until this year worked as a reporter for several national news
programs.
