Petition Sent to President Clinton
Signed by 1786 Citizens

Madison, March 3d, 1999

The Honorable
WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON
The White House
Washington D.C.

Dear Mr. President:

I enclose with this letter a petition signed by 1786 persons from all
over this country. We at the Colombia Support Network, based in
Wisconsin with chapters throughout this country, are very concerned
about the tremendous levels of violence in Colombia. Resources that
have been provided by the United States Government to the
Colombian military or police have often been misused to provide
support or cover for paramilitary operations supported by Colombian
state security forces. These paramilitary attacks have resulted in
more than 1 1/2 million displaced people and killings and torture of
many, many innocent Colombian peasants and their families.

We ask, therefore, that you implement the points we raise in the
petition. The United States Government should do what it can to
promote peace and well-being for the people of Colombia. On behalf
of the 1786 persons who signed the petition, I request the courtesy
of a prompt response.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

JOHN I. LAUN
