The Colombia Support Network (CSN) celebrates the liberation by the FARC guerrillas of 10 policeman and soldiers, many of whom had spent up to 14 years as prisoners in the very hostile physical environment of the Colombian rainforest. These prisoners should have been released long ago as part of a prisoner exchange with guerrillas being held in jails. We hope that their release will be a meaningful step to a negotiated settlement. It is encouraging that, as the civilian leader of the release effort, former Senator Piedad Cordoba, reported, the FARC firmly promised that they will no longer engage in kidnapping civilians for ransom. As we have in the past, we again call upon the FARC and the ELN guerrillas to follow the norms of international humanitarian law and to act in accordance with human rights principles. These norms include eschewing the recruitment of minors and renouncing the use of land mines, which every year kill and maim many noncombatants.
We also call upon the Colombian government to facilitate the release of those the guerrilla organizations are holding hostage. We particularly appreciate the extraordinary work of Piedad Cordoba in pushing for and arranging the release of 24 persons who were being held by the guerrillas, including the 10 released yesterday. All Colombians and all of us who seek to promote peace and justice in Colombia need to give great credit to Senator Cordoba for her great determination and selfless commitment to the goal of obtaining the release of all prisoners. She is quite simply a hero. And we applaud the support provided to her efforts by Colombianos y Colombianas por la Paz, whose unflagging energy has been essential in producing the release of prisoners and hostages by the FARC.
Finally, we would like to see the Colombian government let the families of the persons being released come to them as they alight from the rescue helicopters. The release is a very human event; family members and relatives of the released persons should be among the first to greet and embrace them.

Colombia Support Network ( CSN) recibe con gran alegría la noticia de la liberación por parte de la guerrilla de las FARC de 10 policías y soldados que pasaron hasta 14 años prisioneros en el ambiente hostil y peligroso de la selva colombiana. Han debido ser liberados hace mucho tiempo como parte de un intercambio por guerrilleros presos. Tenemos la esperanza de que su liberación sea un paso significativo para una solución negociada. Es una gran noticia saber que, como lo informó la Ex- senadora Piedad Córdoba, las FARC prometieron no volver a secuestrar civiles a cambio de rescate. Como lo hemos dicho en el pasado, de nuevo llamamos a las FARC y al ELN a que cumplan las normas del derecho internacional humanitario y actuen de acuerdo a los principios de derechos humanos. Esas normas incluyen el reclutamiento de menores y la renuncia a seguir usando minas “quiebrapatas”, que matan y causan daño a muchos no- combatientes.
Hacemos un llamado al gobierno colombiano para facilitar la liberación de los que se encuentran actualmente secuestrados por la guerrilla. Apreciamos en su valor el trabajo extraordinario de Piedad Córdoba en su empeño y su trabajo para lograr la liberación de 24 personas liberadas, incluyendo a los 10 liberados ayer. Todos los colombianos y los que buscamos promover una paz con justicia social en Colombia debemos otorgar un gran crédito a la senadora Córdoba por su gran empeño y generoso compromiso al objetivo para liberar a todos los secuestrados. Simplemente ella es una heroína. Aplaudimos también el apoyo a sus esfuerzos dado por Colombianos y Colombianas por la Paz, cuya energía sin límites fué esencial para producir la liberacion de prisioneros y secuestrados por las FARC.
Como nota final, preferiríamos que el gobierno colombiano permitiera que sean las familias de las personas liberadas quienes los reciban cuando dejen los helicópteros. La liberación es un evento muy humano; son los familiares y parientes las primeras personas que deben recibirlos y abrazarlos.
