When the polls closed and they began counting the votes, the Historic Pact Party had obtained the recovery of four seats in the Senate, after overcoming serious irregularities in the preliminary results. On that Wednesday morning, members of this coalition that were looking at the teams of canvassers reported that they had recovered another 30,000 votes, and with that, Jahel Quiroga’s seat in the Senate was assured.

The industrial engineer, attorney, and human rights defender, was well. known in Barrancabermeja in the ‘80’s. Born in Chaparral, Tolima Department, she was formerly the Director of the human rights organization, CREDHOS, as well as Reiniciar. She had distinguished herself for being one of the voices that had fought the hardest for justice to be done for the genocide of the Patriotic Union Party, which had nearly 6,000 victims.

Jahel has been the victim of several attempts on her life, and of a number of threats because of the work she does in defense of those victims. She has urged, together with several organizations, for the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights to present the UP case to the Inter-American Court, the agency that would be the next to issue its decision. The victims are hoping that justice for this genocide may be approaching.

With her possible arrival in the Congress for the Historic Pact Party, she will be writing another chapter in the history of Colombian victims. They will be able to count on an important representation, who will be making laws to put an end to impunity. Quiroga will work hand in hand with Aída Avella, another Senator from the UP.

Even though information about the canvass isn’t confirmed yet by the Registry, Historic Pact has assured that the commissions are presenting all of the appropriate claims, and there will have to be a definitive result in the next few days.

“The canvass is progressing: Historic Pact chooses its Senator No. 20. It’s Attorney Jahel Quiroga. Sara Castellanos, of the Christian Party, included in the Liberal Party list, wasn’t elected, so the Liberal Party is left with 14 Senators.
